  • Day 1  Arrive in Adelaide and transfer to our houseboat at Murray Bridge. Pre-dinner drinks and dinner. (D)
    Day 2  Start with a lesson on the basics of tonal values, perspective, and mixing Australian greens. Cruise upriver to Mannum for a painting session on land. (B,D)
    Day 3  First a lesson on skies, cliffs and trees, then you put your lesson into practice, painting the surrounding river scenes from on board and later on land. (B,L,D)
    Day 4  A lesson on painting water and reflections (great for capturing ripples, shapes, and colours of the Murray). We moor at Younghusband which has quaint little riverside shacks to paint! (B,L,D)
    Day 5  A short lesson on painting birds – invaluable if you want to add life to your Murray River scenes. More painting on land later, as we spot birds and animals galore. BBQ dinner tonight and entertainment by your crew. What do they have planned? (B,L,D)
    Day 6  More sketching and painting under Renata’s guidance, including a late lesson on sunsets. (B,L,D)
    Day 7  Return to Murray Bridge and leave our houseboat behind. A visit to Hahndorf for some sketching and shopping in this famous German settlement. Farewell dinner tonight. (B,D)
    Day 8  Transfer to airport and sadly to say goodbye until next time.(B)

Follow in the footsteps of German-born and widely acclaimed Australian artist, Hans Heysen on this carefully selected art tour.  Who better to do this with than artist and tutor, Leonie Norton, whose style and love of the Australian landscape is uniquely her own. We will visit and sketch some of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes including the picturesque Barossa Valley, the quaint historical towns of Quorn, Clare, and Burra, and the rugged Flinders Ranges.

Leonie Norton is an international artist, author, and ardent traveller, taking travel sketching art groups both overseas and within Australia for over ten years. She shares her enthusiasm and knowledge to teach people of all skill levels. Her extensive experience makes this popular watercolour tutor highly in demand. Her articles appear regularly in Australian Artist magazine, Artists’ Palette, Back to Basics, and Drawing and Inspiration.

  • Day 1  Arrive in Adelaide where you are met by your Aussie Redback Tours team.  Straight to Burra for “meet-and-greet” drinks and nibbles with our tutor and other passengers. (D)
    Day 2  A day of sketching in the lovely copper mining town of Burra.  Our tutor will provide sketching tips and advice.  (B,D)
    Day 3  Sketching in the lovely area of Clare, known for its scenic landscapes, enchanting scrublands, rolling hills, and Stringybark vegetation.  Our tutor’s tips will help you capture the scenes around you.  (B)
    Day 4  A morning of sketching in Quorn, followed by lunch and a drive to Wilpena Pound.  (B, D)
    Day 5  A day at Brachina Gorge – a window into 650 million years of the earth’s history.  Leonie will show us how to capture the magnificent scenery in front of us.  (B, L)
    Day 6  Start the day with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the Flinders Ranges (own expense), then a day of sketching at historic Blinman and surrounds.  (B, D)
    Day 7  Today we visit Hawker and the Jeff Morgan Gallery, travelling past classic Hans Heysen scenery on the way to our accommodation in the Barossa Valley.(B)
    Day 8  We travel to Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, and spend the morning sketching here under our tutor’s guidance. Farewell dinner tonight and review of all the work we’ve done this week. (B, D)
    Day 9  On the way to the airport, we drop in at The Cedars to see Hans Heysen’s studio (the oldest art studio in Australia). (B)

    Day 3  We head through Jamestown and Hawker to our accommodation for the next four nights at Rawnsley Park Station. In the afternoon we spend time painting this amazing vista under Ross’s guidance.  (B,D)
    Day 4  We start the day with an opportunity to take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the Flinders Ranges (own expense) before spending the day at Rawnsley Park Station, painting at Station Hill lookout which has uninterrupted views of Rawnsley Bluff, the Chace and Elder ranges. Great subjects for painting. (B)
    Day 5   A full day of painting at historic old Blinman, the highest town in South Australia.  The town began with the discovery of copper in 1859 and commencement of mining in 1862.  It has some lovely old heritage buildings which we’ll be able to paint, and after lunch we’ll have another stop in the Flinders Ranges to paint till it’s time to head back to our accommodation. (B,D)
    Day 6  Today we spend time at Merna Mora, an area steeped in history with many artifacts and evidence of the early days of settlement. Ross will demonstrate how to capture this delightful area in the Flinders Ranges.  (B,L)
    Day 7  We paint more classic Flinders Ranges scenery today. Ross will choose your location and after a demo on how to capture the scene in front you, you’ll be free to paint for the rest of the day, stopping only for a bite of lunch. (B,D)
    Day 8  This morning we travel through Hawker and classic Hans Heysen scenery on the way to our accommodation in Hahndorf. After lunch, you’ll have time to paint in Hahndorf before a farewell dinner tonight when we review of all the work we’ve done this week. (B, D)
    Day 9  On the way to the airport, we drop in at The Cedars to see Hans Heysen’s studio (the oldest art studio in Australia). (B)

Capture some of Australia’s most stunning landscapes and natural features on this amazing tour.  Sketch and paint majestic gorges, rolling hills and mountains, linen white gum trees and much more! We spend quality time in each location, watching Leon demonstrate how to capture our beautiful surroundings in our art, and then having a go ourselves.

Leon is a professional plein air and studio oil painter from Perth, Western Australia. His process involves sketches and quick oil studies before working on a more refined painting. Winner of numerous awards in Australia and internationally, he is highly respected amongst his peers and is regularly invited to exhibit and teach in the USA and Europe. Leon is also the found of Plein Air Painters of Australia and is an ambassador for world leading art supply companies, Michael Harding Oil Paints and Rosemary and Co Brushes.   • Day 1  Arrive in Alice Springs where you are met by your Aussie Redback Tours team and transferred to our accommodation.  Later we enjoy a meet-and-greet with our tutor and fellow artists, and our first dinner together. (D)
    Day 2  An opportunity for an early morning balloon flight over the MacDonnell Ranges (own expense) before breakfast, then we spend all day painting the buildings and countryside at Alice Springs Telegraph Station. Leon will start with a demonstration of how he tackles the subject in front of him, followed by time for you to do your own painting.  (B)
    Day 3  Tutorial and painting at Simpsons Gap this morning, with Leon’s guidance. Simpsons Gap is a stunning gorge carved out of the West MacDonnell Range and is a wonderful painting subject. Lunch at Glen Helen Homestead (our accommodation) followed by more painting and an opportunity for a helicopter flight over the gorge (own expense).  (B,D)
    Day 4  All day painting at Ormiston Gorge under your tutor’s guidance, with endless subjects – the earthy orange gorge, crystal reflections, grand old gum trees, birdlife, wildlife and more. Ormiston Gorge is one of the most picturesque places on this tour and you will be amazed at the colours, reflections and textures around you.(B, D)
    Day 5  A full day of painting again, this time at Ellery Creek Big Hole. Thousands of years of massive floods have carved out this beautiful waterhole and unlocked some amazing geology (an artist’s dream)! (B)
    Day 6  This morning we travel to Ross River (stopping for morning tea in Alice Springs on the way). We enjoy lunch at Ross River Homestead and then in the afternoon Leon will set up his painting gear and demonstrate more painting techniques, painting our surrounds.  (B,D)
    Day 7  A day of painting at the stunning Trephina Gorge, noted for its sheer quartzite cliffs, River Redgum lined watercourses, and wide sandy creek beds. Tonight we’ll have a “show-and-tell” of the works everyone has created during this tour. It will be wonderful to see everyone’s styles and subject choices. (B,L,D)
    Day 8  We part our ways today at Alice Springs airport, taking with us new painting skills and memories. (B)

Broome is one of WA’s most popular destinations famous for Cable Beach sunset camel rides and world class pearls. This tour caters for artists and non-artists, as there is much to see and do. If you are an artist, you will be spoilt for variety of choices to capture in your travel diaries, and if you aren’t an artist, the Broome Visitor Centre offers day trips and sightseeing that you can do.

We also visit Willie Creek Pearl farm, the town beach, Broome Museum, and Roebuck Bay, and have an afternoon at Cable Beach, followed by fish and chips sunset dinner. Highlights include the Thursday night markets and a movie at the famous Sun Pictures (own expense).

He is a much sought after watercolour tutor across the globe and has been a regular tutor at the legendary Bathurst summer and winter schools for the last 6 years.

  • Day 1 After arriving in Adelaide, you are transferred to Murray Bridge to begin your art and nature-lovers cruise. Tonight there’s a pre-dinner drink for everyone to get to know one another, before a delicious hot supper. (D)
    Days 2 – 5 Get those brushes ready! Terry will set up his easel each day and show you how he paints our stunning surroundings. Learn how to capture light, mood, and the beautiful Australian colours. Your subjects will be endless – towering golden cliffs, gentle reflecting waters, a vast array of flora and fauna including plenty of birdlife, and little towns and settlements along the way.  After your lessons, it will be your turn to paint under Terry’s guidance as you continue cruising along the stunning Murray River.

    Non-painters and painters will also have the opportunity to disembark and visit Murray Aquaculture; take part in a guided land tour learning about the area’s flora and fauna and geology; visit Ngaut Nagut Aboriginal conservation site to see archaeological digs and aboriginal rock art; and view the Murray River’s amazing vista from above. Also included is an evening campfire and singalong on shore, and a Captain’s Dinner on night 5 (includes a complimentary champagne or cocktail, followed by a five-course menu of choice featuring mouth-watering dishes based on modern Australian cuisine.     Day 6 Our last day on the Proud Mary with another painting lesson and free painting time, or simply making the most of the surroundings. At 4 pm we tie up at Murray Bridge, say goodbye to our Proud Mary captain and staff, and travel with the Aussie Redback tours team to Hahndorf for a two-night stay. (B,L,D)
    Day 7 We visit Hans Heysen’s studio and home (The Cedars), to learn about this very famous Australian artist, and paint and relax in the gardens. Later we drive to Hahndorf for lunch and a painting session with Terry in the main street. Learn how to simplify buildings and add atmosphere to your scenes. Non-painters can use this time to explore the many unique shops and buildings for last-minute gifts and souvenirs. Tonight we have a “show-and-tell” of our paintings, followed by a farewell dinner together.(B,D)
    Day 8 Unfortunately all good tours must come to an end and this morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport where we part our ways, taking home lots of lovely memories.
